Explosive device found at home of "exciting American billionaire"
The FBI is conducting investigations after an explosive device was found in a mailbox at the home of US billionaire George Soros, the arch-foe of conspiracy theory and European and American nationalists, in New York.
Police in the upscale city of Bedford, about 60 km from New York, said they received a call from an employee at Soros' home on Monday afternoon, saying a suspicious package had been found in the mailbox.
Local police added that the officer opened the parcel and saw that it was actually like an explosive device and put it in an outside area, and the police then detonated it.
A spokeswoman for Soros said he was not at home when the incident occurred.
The file was handed over to the FBI's Counterterrorism Unit, which did not give any information Tuesday when contacted. No one has been arrested.
The Soros Foundation, Open Society Foundation, said in a statement Tuesday that it condemned "the hate speech that dominates politics in the United States and in many countries of the world and leads to extremism and violence."
"In this climate of fear, deception and growing authoritarianism, just expressing opinions can bring death threats."
The man of money in the statement, he "devoted his life" to encourage a multiplicity of views, calling "politicians of all parties to moderate in their statements."
George Soros, a Hungarian, has become wealthy thanks to money markets and has been targeted for years by nationalists and conspiracy theorists in Europe and the United States who accuse him in particular of supporting illegal immigration through his philanthropic work.
In Europe, his organization moved in August from Budapest to Berlin after the government of Victor Urban adopted a series of laws entitled "Stop Soros."
In the United States, US President Donald Trump also accused Soros, a major donor to Democrats, of funding demonstrations against the appointment of Judge Brett Cavanaugh in the Supreme Court.
The Republican Rep. Of Florida, Matt Goetz, was accused last week of sending financial support to the "convoy" of Honduran migrants heading for the US border through Mexico as the mid-term elections near the United States approach.
At the end of May, the pro-Trump actress, Roseanne Barr, accused the Jewish parent of being "a Nazi" before apologizing in June.
