Choosing a watermelon ends with a family massacre in Turkey

A Turkish woman claimed that she had killed her husband in self-defense after he felt jealous when a watermelon salesman took her hand, praising her good choice.
Nurkan Saraks, 28, was first brought before the investigating judge on October 23 for the first time since her arrest in Antalya in June.

The wife explained that the incident dates back to June 4 when she was shopping with her husband, Genghis Aydin, at a vegetable market in Kibez province, and agreed to sell a melon to choose the same fruit, but her husband was unhappy with her choice.

But the seller, talking to the wife, said she told her that she had made a good choice, which made her jealousy and anger, and when the house returned a quarrel between them developed into a beating and violence.

Sars said her husband tried to stifle her. "He was drunk and threatened to slaughter me. I ran into a room and slept and locked the door behind me, but he managed to take it off and began beating me and slapping me."

"I rushed to the kitchen and took a knife to defend myself, and my husband stabbed him and I hit him from the back," he said. "Suddenly I found him screaming and saying, 'What did you do?' I thought he was joking before he fell down with his blood."

The trial was adjourned to hear testimony from witnesses at the next hearing. Sars, a mother of two, faces a prison sentence of up to 24 if she is convicted of murder.
