Colored water washed cars in the narrow streets of St Yorink, rivers flocked to its banks and flooded streets and houses, forcing residents to shelter in a sports center in the nearby town of Manakur.

According to the El Pais newspaper and other media, at least nine people are still missing, but the emergency services have declined to confirm this number.

Antonia Boutha, a senior official in the Santoriniq mayor's office, said two of the victims were Britons.

"It was a big storm, in just two hours, about 180 liters of rain fell and we realized that we could not control the water," she said.

"The situation is catastrophic and we are trying to find out where the survivors are and help the people, but everything is overflowing and people are unable to leave their homes."

Residents were displaced by water and mud from these houses as flood waters receded early on Wednesday, leaving side roads littered with cars and beaches and covered by debris.

Emergency services on Twitter said the bodies of two men were found today, one in the northeastern town of Arta and the other in Sioux to the south on the coast.

The regional government called for an emergency meeting, and authorities said rescue teams and army units were sent to the area to provide assistance.

"My solidarity and support for the families and friends of the victims and all those affected by these tragic floods," Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez wrote on Twitter.

Sanchez's office said the prime minister planned to visit the region later Wednesday.
