Dina Powell, executive director of Goldman Sachs, has withdrawn from the circle of candidates for the post of US ambassador to the United Nations, a senior administration source said on Thursday.Powell told President Donald Trump by telephone that she was honored to be considered for her job, but plans to stay at Goldman Sachs.
An informed source said the US president was considering assigning the mission to US Ambassador to Canada Kelly Kraft, and another source said that Interior Minister Ryan Zinki is running for office.
Trump has spoken to Powell about the post since outgoing Ambassador Nicky Healy announced her intention to resign this week.
Powell has previously served as deputy national security adviser at the White House. She returned to Goldman Sachs this year and is a member of the bank's management committee.
Powell was famous last December when she announced her resignation after Trump officially recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. But White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said Powell had planned to stay for one year, saying her departure was not linked to the Jerusalem resolution .
She was born in 1973 in Cairo to an Egyptian army officer and a mother at the American University, before her Coptic family decided to immigrate to Texas, where her father was driving a bus and running a grocery store with her mother in Dallas.
Trump said on Wednesday he had several candidates to succeed Healy, who announced her resignation on Tuesday.
