Earthquake hits Greek coast
A powerful earthquake measuring 6.8 on Friday hit the Ionian Sea off the coast of Greece, 35 kilometers west of the village of Lithakia in southern Zakynthos island, the US Seismological Institute said.
The quake occurred at 22:54 GMT, at a depth of 16.6 km, the institute said.
According to the Observatory of Athens, the epicenter of the earthquake is located at sea 287 west of the Greek capital of Athens.
Greece, particularly west and south of the Peloponnese peninsula, is located on large seismic faults, constantly exposing Earth to earthquakes, but rarely causing casualties.
In July 2017, an earthquake measuring 6.7 degrees hit the tourist island of Kos, killing two people and causing considerable material damage.
In September 1986, a 6.2 magnitude earthquake in Kalamata, the largest city in the province of Messinia, killed 20 people.
