Mass protests in the streets of Berlin against racism in Germany
Tens of thousands of Germans took to the streets of Berlin to protest against the rise of racist trends in the country, especially after several incidents in eastern Germany that were shocking.
The rally claimed that the number of demonstrators was about 242 thousand, while it was expected to participate 40,000.
Theresa Hartmann, spokeswoman for the All-We-One group, said the large number of demonstrators was evidence of the "success" of the demonstration.
The police did not provide any specific number of demonstrators, saying only that they were "tens of thousands."
The demonstrators chanted slogans such as "Say it out loud, we are all one and will not separate."
Police announced late Saturday that around 900 security forces had accompanied the demonstration and there had been no reported incidents.
Amid apricot weather, demonstrators marched in the heart of Berlin to the famous Brandburg Gate where a number of singers were on stage.
"No place for the Nazis" and "Rescue operations at sea is not a crime," she said, referring to the rescue of migrants at sea.
The All One is composed of non-governmental organizations, artists, trade unions, religious and charitable organizations.
The demonstration was called "for a free, open and against exclusion", aimed at protesting the rise of racist currents led by the far right who entered the House of Representatives about a year ago.
The far-right "Alternative for Germany" party has built its popularity on anti-immigrant rhetoric after more than a million of them arrived in Germany in 2015 and 2016.
In the German city of Chemnitz, a far-right demonstration in late August turned into a crackdown on foreigners on the streets of the city after a German killing killed a refugee. Some demonstrators also gave a well-known Nazi salutation.
Political officials from the left especially supported the demonstration, along the lines of Foreign Minister Haikou Mas's broad-based popularity.
