Massive loss to Merkel's party in local elections
German Chancellor Angela Merkel's right-wing party and its Social Democrat partner in the ruling coalition in Berlin on Sunday scored a big loss in local elections in the Hesse region, according to polls.
The conservative chancellor's party came first with 27 to 28 percent of the vote in the province, but with 10 points down from the last local elections in 2013.
The Social Democratic Party also lost 10 points by registering 20 percent of the vote, according to the polls of two state television stations, ARD and ZDF.
The "Alternative to Germany" party took 12 to 13 percent to the regional parliament, the last in Germany where the extreme right was not represented.
