American immigrant convoy enters the "road of death"
Thousands of Central American immigrants, seeking to enter the United States, have entered a dangerous area in Mexico, where gangs have been active for years, near the so-called "road of death."
Four thousand immigrants poured into the city of Córdoba in the state of Veracruz on the Gulf of Mexico, and still have hundreds of miles to reach the United States, three weeks after the march, the Daily Mail reported Monday.
The immigrant convoy, one of three convoys, was on its way to the so-called "road of death" and settled in the town of Cordoba for convenience, a gateway to the central part of Mexico, making the trip longer.
Migrants were forced to cross state sugar fields and fruit orchards. Hundreds of migrants disappeared over the years and are believed to have been kidnapped in an attempt to secure funds for their release.
The authorities said in September they had discovered the remains of at least 174 people buried in secret graves in the area, raising questions about whether the bodies belonged to immigrants who were considered missing.
Migrants in convoys to the United States say they are fleeing rampant poverty, gang violence and political instability in Central American countries, such as Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador and Nicaragua.
Three convoys of immigrants have spread over 500 kilometers of highways in a number of Mexican states, notably Chiapas, Oaxaca and Veracruz.
US President Donald Trump ordered the deployment of additional US troops on the border with Mexico a few days ago in an effort to stop convoys of migrants wanting to enter Turkish territory.
