In a conference on "toilets", US billionaire Bill Gates announced his long-term plan to market toilets that do not use water or sanitation.
At the "reinventing the toilet" conference held by Gates in China, the billionaire raised his idea, using a can of crap he brought with him on the podium.
Gates used the box to draw the attention of the audience and to put his idea of providing sanitary toilets to all countries of the world, without the need for water.
Gates, through his private foundation, has allocated $ 200 million to teams of scientists to access the "ideal" toilet, which costs no more than 5 cents a day.
"The process of manufacturing new toilets is still in its infancy, and it may take 10 years to reach the global distribution required," Gates said at the conference.
The "non-watery" toilet will use chemicals to convert human waste into fertilizer, as announced by the billionaire at the conference.
"Rich countries today have a sewage system where water takes human waste from latrines to waste treatment plants," Gates said at the conference.
"This requires a large number of pipes, which is very expensive and may not be applied in poor cities," he said.
According to the World Health Organization, 2.3 billion people around the world lack sanitation facilities, such as latrines.
Gates seeks his new idea of tackling this problem, and providing new toilets for everyone around the world, without the need for a sewerage system.
