Israeli interior minister accused of corruption

Israeli police recommended Tuesday that Interior Minister Aryeh Deri be charged with fraud and treason as part of an investigation into real estate deals.
The Israeli prosecutor is expected to decide whether to indict Derai, who heads the ultra-Orthodox Shas party, who has spent time in jail for corruption.

"The results of the investigation indicate there is conclusive evidence that Deri committed fraud and dishonesty in connection with his behavior while in office as a minister," a police statement said.

He spoke of evidence of tax irregularities worth hundreds of thousands of dollars, laundering money and others.

According to the AFP, "the police statement that the investigation dealt with the large financial transfers, conducted by Deri on the connection to the sale of land.

For his part, Deri insisted on his innocence, and pointed out that the recommendation of the police did not include the previous accusations of obtaining bribes.

This is the latest accusation faced by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government.

Police have recommended that Netanyahu be charged in two separate investigations into corruption, while the prosecutor is expected to make a decision in the coming months on whether he will be charged.

He was sentenced to three years in prison in 2000 for receiving bribes worth $ 155,000, although the sentence was reduced by one third of the time for his good conduct.
