The weekend turns into a humanitarian disaster

At least nine people have sunk into a villa in a village near the Sicilian city of Palermo after heavy rain in the region, state media reported on Sunday.
Heavy rains hit the island of southern Italy on Saturday, several days after storms swept through much of the north of the country.

Italian radio said one person survived the floods late on Saturday after sticking to a tree and that the victims were from two families who spend the weekend together, the Associated Press reported.

Nine people, including a one-year-old boy, and a three-year-old boy were killed in a villa in Casteldaccia, near Palermo, where the flood-hit Melissa River flooded the house, the ANSA said.

No further details were available.

The storms killed at least 15 people, destroyed and uprooted millions of trees near the Alpine valleys, cut off electricity from several villages, and cut off roads for several days.
