The arrest of an adviser to the German army on suspicion of spying for Iran

German prosecutors have announced the arrest of an army employee on suspicion of spying for Iranian intelligence.
The federal prosecutor's office said in a statement that the German-Afghan man, identified only as "Abdulhamid S." in line with German privacy rules, was arrested Tuesday in the state of Rhineland, west of Germany.

The 50-year-old suspect was an interpreter for the German army and was accused of transferring information to the Iranian intelligence service.

The German Defense Ministry confirmed the reports but declined to give any further details.

Spiegel Online reported that the suspect had been spying on the army for years and had access to highly classified material, including the German forces mission in Afghanistan.
