After playing his songs by mistake .. A team achieve its first victory
Gibraltar won their first international friendly with a 1-0 victory over Armenia in the European Championship in Yerevan on Saturday after the national anthem of Liechtenstein was played wrong.
The Gibraltar team beat their Armenian counterpart, who included Arsenal's Henrik Makhetarian, thanks to a goal by Joseph Chippolina in the 50th minute.
This is the first time that guests have won an unfriendly match since joining the European Union in 2013 and the players were overjoyed after the end whistle.
But the evening started badly for the winner when the national anthem of Liechtenstein was played before the match. The Gibraltar Football Association called for an angry tweet on Twitter.
"The Football Association of Gibraltar is very frustrated when I mention that, but before the night match in the European League against Armenia, the national anthem of Liechtenstein was played.
He added: "The Armenian Federation apologized to the head of the delegation representing the Union of Gibraltar in Yerevan for this omission and also issued a declaration in the national stadium there was an apology for this error."
The mistake seemed to spur Gibraltar's players to hold on to the hosts, whose best result was the loss of their chance to qualify for Euro 2012 in the final 40 minutes after the guests took the ball by 28 per cent and tried twice on goal.
Armenia, who took the helm of Mkhtaryan, paid 35, including 10 shots on goal.
This surprise victory brought Gibraltar to the tie with Armenia with 3 points each in Group D of the fourth level, 6 points behind Macedonia, while Liechtenstein also have 3 points.
