Atletico beat Dortmund and lead the Spanish league

MADRID (Reuters) - Atletico Madrid climbed to the top of the Primera Liga with a comfortable 2-0 victory over Real Sociedad to ease the pain of a 4-0 defeat to Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League last week.
Defender Diego Godin opened the scoring just before the break and slipped to the ground to turn the ball into the net after Sociedad's defense failed to keep a pass from Argentine Angel Correa.

Brazilian left-back Felipe Lewis finished the win in the 60th minute with a powerful right-footed shot in the top corner after he entered the area from the left side and cleverly skipped one of Sociedad's defenders.

Atletico are top of the standings with 19 points from 10 matches, although champions Barcelona could jump to the top if they beat Real Madrid at the summit meeting on Sunday. Alaves will also be at Atletico defeating Villarreal.

Atletico coach Diego Simonei said he always had confidence in his side even though he was beaten in the Champions League by Dortmund, their heaviest defeat since taking charge in December 2011.

"We always need to compete well in every match, and despite the bad results in Germany, we managed to play well after three days and our reaction was excellent," said Simeone, who are three points behind Dortmund in Group A.

"We just had a few changes because I thought the team was still in good shape and it was difficult to involve other players," he said, adding: "I liked the performance because the players showed consistency and maintained their mental strength.
