"Landslides" kill dozens in Uganda

At least 34 people have died from mudslides, caused by heavy rains in a mountainous area in eastern Uganda, which are always prone to such disasters.
Red Cross spokeswoman Irene Nakasita said on Friday that more victims were likely to be discovered when rescue operations reached all affected areas in the foothills of Mount Eljoun.

She said the people were killed by rocks and clay blocks rolled from the hills after a period of heavy rain continued Thursday afternoon in the area of Budoda.

In March 2010, at least 100 people were killed in similar mud slides in Pododa.

Efforts by the Ugandan government have not been successful for years in moving people from this dangerous region, the Associated Press reported.
