Postponement of the elections in Kandahar province after the Taliban bloody attack
The legislative elections in the southern province of Kandahar have been postponed after a Taliban attack on Thursday at a security meeting at the governor's headquarters in which state police chief General Abdul Razeq was killed.
The attack targeted the US commander in the country at a meeting in Kandahar state that killed two senior Afghan officials, while the senior US commander attending the high-level meeting was not hurt when the attack occurred.
The meeting on Thursday in the city of Kandahar, on the security plans for the parliamentary elections that took place this weekend, and immediately after the meeting, a guard of the Afghan armed forces opened fire from his rifle to the Afghan delegation departing.
Kandahar police chief Abdul Razek and at least one senior Afghan official were killed in the attack.
A spokesman for the Taliban said the top US commander in the country, General Scott Miller was the target of the attack, which escaped without being hurt.
According to the Associated Press photographer who was present, the two delegations were gathering to take a group photo when he opened fire inside the governor's compound in Kandahar city.
In addition to Abdel Razek, the head of intelligence in Kandahar, Abdel Moneim, was killed in the attack, according to Deputy Governor of the province.
