Prevention of "religious symbols" among state officials in Quebec, Canada
The new prime minister of Quebec, Francois Lego, said Thursday that his government, which unveiled its formation, "will prohibit state officials in positions of authority to wear religious symbols."
"We will honor our pledge," Lego said, announcing his cabinet of 13 men and 13 women, most of whom have no ministerial experience. Lego heads the Alliance for the Future of Quebec.
Lego's promise came to revive a debate that Quebec has been divided over for more than 10 years and which previous governments have not resolved.
Lego, who was accused of being a populist because of his focus on reducing immigration during his campaign, did not mention the subject in his speech.
Lego, 61, stressed that education, economy and health would be his government's priorities.
