US billionaire receives explosive device by mail
LONDON (Reuters) - A parcel containing an apparent explosive device was found in a mailbox outside the home of billionaire George Soros in New York on Monday and the New York Times reported a team of detonators detonated in a nearby forest area.
Soros, one of the world's largest donors to liberal groups and issues, has become the target of a fierce media campaign by his Hungarian government and a hated figure among right-wing activists in Eastern Europe and the United States.
The authorities went to the house in Katuna, New York, after receiving a phone call about a suspicious package around 3:45 pm local time, police said in a statement.
An employee at Soros residence opened the package and found what appeared to be an explosive device. Police explained that the officer had placed the parcel in a forest area and contacted the authorities.
A police official told The New York Times that the bomb squad arrived and blew them up.
The New York Times said Soros was not at home when the parcel was found, and police said the FBI was investigating the incident.
A Hungarian government spokesman declined to comment.
