Liverpool coach admits "hard truth" ... and provides justification

After a sudden loss by Serbia's Red Star Belgrade in the Champions League, Liverpool coach Jurgen Klopp admitted that his team "has not yet reached its high level last season."
But Clube said Liverpool were "still in a strong position," ahead of Fulham's Premier League hosting on Sunday.

Liverpool did not have the taste of losing the league alongside Manchester City leaders Chelsea and second, two points behind the top of the ranking.

After a 4-1 win over Cardiff City in the league, Liverpool's offensive performance fell to three in the last 5 games, before losing 2-0 at Red Star in the Champions League on Tuesday.

Liverpool were second in the top scorers in the league last season with 84 goals behind City, who scored 106 goals. Clube said the comparison with last season could contribute to Anfield's low morale.

"So far this season is really successful, but the fans do not feel this for two reasons. The first is the comparison with last season and the strong offensive performance in some games, and City and Chelsea are having a good season," he told a news conference.

"People believe that this season will only be successful if we win the title, we want to win everything, but we have to build on what we have, continue to develop performance and be more confident," he said.

"We had a strong shock on Tuesday that we did not expect (loss to Red Star)," he said.

"We could have done better and that's always the case," said former coach Borussia Dortmund, "but we've had nice football this season so I see it as a success."

Club midfielder Jordan Henderson and defender Joe Gomez were ready to play Sunday after recovering from injury.

"When Henderson is always absent, we miss him all," Henderson said. "I would say Henderson's presence in Red Star would have changed the game completely, but the whole game was strange."
