Technology companies urging Americans to vote
NEW YORK (Reuters) - Technology and social networking companies said they were making more efforts to boost voter participation in the mid-term congressional elections on Tuesday after lawmakers and others criticized it for not being able or unwilling to stop the flow of counterfeit or inflammatory information on divisive political issues.
Companies such as Snape and Facebook will remind users of the need to vote and will provide a link to access to polling stations and polling hours.
Sharing sites that attract younger users is a precursor to some democracy advocates who are concerned about the low turnout of younger voters.
Only about 17 percent of the 18-24 age group voted in the 2014 congressional elections in 2014, although some polls say the figure could be higher this year.
Democrats are generally expected to win the 23 seats they need to win the majority of House Republicans, an advantage they could use to disrupt President Donald Trump's agenda, which includes a tough policy on immigration and other Republican positions that Democrats resent.
