FIFA says "World Cup"

After controversial proposals in global football circles, the International Football Association (FIFA) has spoken of the creation of a League-like mini-World Cup and modified the format of the World Cup.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino, who strongly supports the amendments, announced that the European Union postponed any decision on the proposals and formed a committee to study them.

"We have taken a decision to form a committee to strengthen the course of consultation on the World Cup and the World League of Nations," Infantino told a news conference at the end of a meeting of the Fifa Council in the Rwandan capital Kigali.

The UEFA proposal includes the participation of eight teams, closer to a mini-world cup.

He explained that the committee will submit "concrete proposals" to be presented to the next meeting of the Council, scheduled in the city of Miami in March.

Infantino's proposals for the amendments, which he said would provide billions of dollars in revenue, have been criticized by many parties, who see the schedule as crowded enough and can not afford to add new contests.

The criticism has reached the point of accusing Infantino, who has been president of the Union since the beginning of 2016, push for these proposals to enhance his chances of winning a new mandate at the head of the international body, in the elections scheduled for June 2019.

The most prominent Slovenian opposition was Alexander Chivrin, President of the European Union (EUEVA), where press reports said he waved the withdrawal of representatives of national associations on the continent of the FIFA meeting if not taken into account.

"I am happy to contribute today to peace at the global level if some see it as so dramatic," he said.

"Everyone agrees that the FIFA Club World Cup needs to be modified, everyone in the world has different interests, we will not decide today how we are making adjustments," he said. "There are different opinions on the table."

"It is FIFA's duty to organize tournaments, so I do not understand why we can not talk about them," he said.

Infantino proposes to raise the number of participants at the Club World Cup from 7 to 24, to be held once every four years instead of once a year, and to create a biennial World League with promises of revenues from investors of these two competitions of up to $ 25 billion over 12 years, Distributed to continental clubs and federations.

The FIFA president said it would be better if the International Federation organized a tournament that would distribute its revenues to various parties, instead of the large European clubs taking summer tours, which are exclusively for huge revenues.

"Everyone is happy to travel around the world to try to make as much money as possible," he said, adding: "The only body in football that has solidarity and development activities around the world is FIFA. "He said.

It is noteworthy that the European Union launched weeks ago the first edition of the League of Nations across the continent, which gathers teams on four levels, and are played during the international break.
