Trump warns Mexico and threatens to "summon the army"
US President Donald Trump on Thursday threatened to close the border with Mexico if it could not stop the flow of immigrants from Central America to the United States.
"I must ask Mexico, in the strongest terms, to stop this incursion - if it can not, I will summon the US military and close our southern border," the president wrote in a tweet on Twitter.
Trump earlier criticized Mexico for not helping to stop the influx of illegal immigrants into the United States and reiterated his electoral promise that Mexico would pay for the proposed wall on the Mexican-American border.
Trump also renewed his threats to cut financial aid to Central American countries involved in immigration. Migrants who came mainly from Honduras crossed El Salvador and Guatemala.
"The invasion of our country from our southern border, including criminal elements and drugs that flow, is more important to me as a president than trade," he said in a second tweet.
Trump also attacks members of the Democratic Party who want to "open the border."
US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo will visit Panama and Mexico on Thursday and Friday.
