Turkey 's largest freshwater lakes evaporated in weeks

Lake Eber, one of the country's largest freshwater lakes, has been drought-stricken in recent weeks after a drought hit parts of western Turkey.
The Turkish newspaper Hurriyet published pictures showing the lake in the city of Afyonkharhasar in the Bolvadin district, where the water completely evaporated on 19 October.

The lake is in eleventh place among the largest lakes in Turkey, and its water is depleted by the construction of a dam on the riverbed that feeds it with water.

The mayor of the village where the lake is located said that the economic activities in the area were affected by the drought of the lake and said that it was a source of livelihood for many families, especially those working in agriculture.

A number of fishermen who depended on the lake worried about the future after the lake, which stretched thousands of meters, turned into a barren desert.

The lake was the main source of livelihood for some 30,000 people in four cities and 13 villages scattered along its banks.
