Washington has punished Taliban supporters, including two Iranians
The US Treasury Department has imposed sanctions targeting the Afghan Taliban movement on Tuesday, which deals with those punitive measures, including eight Iranians linked to the Revolutionary Guard, the US Treasury Department said on Tuesday.
The ministry classified individuals, including two Pakistanis and four Afghans, as global terrorists, a measure that allows the US government to freeze assets under US jurisdiction.
The ministry said in a statement that the sanctions targeted Taliban members, who were involved in suicide attacks and other lethal activities, as well as Iranians who provide material and financial support.
"Providing Iran with military training, funding and weapons for the Taliban is another example of Tehran's blatant interference in the region and its support for terrorism."
"The United States and our partners will not tolerate the Iranian regime, which exploits Afghanistan to expand its destabilizing behavior."
The new sanctions follow a wave of violence in Afghanistan ahead of parliamentary elections last week.
It was confirmed that US Army Brigadier General Jeffrey Smiley was one of the Americans who were wounded in an attack that killed a police chief in Kandahar province in southern Afghanistan.
The attack, for which the Taliban claimed responsibility, was a devastating blow to the government, killing the police chief in one of Afghanistan's most important provinces and showing the insurgents' ability to attack even senior commanders.
