The Bank of England on Friday asked citizens to nominate prominent British scientists to appear on a new £ 50 banknote.
"This figure can come from any area of science - but I exclude economists," said Mark Carney, the bank's governor.

The current banknote is £ 50, including the leading steam engines Matthew Bolton and James Watt.

The UK's highest cash category is the latest redesigned paper to be converted from paper to the safest and most sustainable polymer material.

The British have many names to choose from. From the physicist Stephen Hawking, who died in March, to Dorothy Hodgkin, who won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1964.

Proposals can be submitted on the Bank's website until December 14. A short list of recommendations will be drawn up by the Committee and the final selection will be made next year.
