The "frustrating" end of Rooney's "stunning" season

England's Wayne Rooney's "startling" season in the United States ended in a frustrating way, after the veteran star missed a penalty for his side in the playoffs.
DC United, Rooney's team, came out of the first round of the American League playoffs when they were beaten by a penalty shootout in front of Columbus Crew after a 2-2 draw in both original and extra time.

The 33-year-old Rooney wasted his first shot at DC United after keeper Zach Steffen saved his shot.

Luciano Acosta and Nick DeLion have lost two points to DC United, winning a 5-4 win and qualify to the semi-finals of the Eastern Division, where they will play against the New York Red Bulls.

"The penalty shootout is frustrating but the team should be proud of what it has achieved in the last few months," Rooney told reporters.

Defender Frederic Brillent gave C-United the lead in the 21st minute before Federico Higuain, the brother of Argentinian Gonzalo Higuain, scored twice for Crewe in extra time.

Delion realized a long-range strike near the end of extra time.

Rooney joined DC United from Everton while he was finishing the Eastern Division with two wins in 14 games.

But the former Manchester United striker led the team to the knockout stage by finishing fourth after scoring 12 goals and seven in 20 games.
