Turkey orders 103 soldiers arrested for connection to Gulen

Turkish prosecutors have ordered the detention of 103 soldiers on suspicion of links to Fatahullah Gulen, who Ankara accuses of being behind the failed coup attempt in mid-2016, Anatolia news agency reported on Friday.
Police have arrested 74 people so far in Istanbul and 31 provinces, the agency said.

Reuters quoted Anatolia as saying that all the suspects were still in service, some of them colonel and lieutenant colonel, adding that an investigation showed they had continued via landlines and public telephones.

Opponents accuse Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of exploiting the coup attempt as a pretext to quell dissent, while the government says such measures are necessary to counter threats to national security.

Police have been conducting ongoing raids against those believed to be Gulen supporters since the attempted coup in July 2016, which killed 250 people, despite Gulen's denial of involvement in the attempt.
