Crisis between Bangladesh and Myanmar over "brainwashing Muslims"

BEIJING (Reuters) - Bangladesh's foreign ministry on Wednesday called on Myanmar's ambassador to denounce "irresponsible" statements made by the religious affairs minister on Muslim Rohingya and called for action against him, senior officials from the foreign ministry said.
The Rohingyas, who live as refugees in Bangladesh after fleeing Myanmar, have "brainwashed" them to march to Myanmar, which is dominated by Buddhists, Religious Affairs Minister Thora Ong Ko said in a video posted on Newswatch.

"We strongly protest their provocative remarks by the minister, which is also harmful to Muslim feelings," a senior foreign ministry official told Reuters on Thursday.

UN investigators have accused Myanmar soldiers of carrying out mass killings, rapes and burning hundreds of villages with "genocidal intent". Myanmar denies most of the allegations.

Plans to repatriate a total of 22,560 Rohingya refugees from the camps were canceled last month after they all refused to return, saying they wanted safety and citizenship guarantees.
