"Leslie" hit Portugal and cut off electricity from 300 thousand homes

At least 300,000 homes were cut off in Portugal on Sunday after Tropical Storm Leslie hit the country's Atlantic coast and the storm was laden with heavy rain, strong winds and high waves.
Leslie's force was reduced from a hurricane to a storm before arriving in Portugal late on Saturday, as authorities urged residents to stay indoors and stay away from the coastal areas, Reuters reported.

The storm uprooted at least 1,000 trees in coastal towns north of Lisbon, the area where the first storm hit land, damaged power lines and blocked roads.

Authorities said a tree fell and temporarily closed the A1 motorway, which runs through Portugal.

The force of the storm was strongest at night, with winds of up to 100 kilometers per hour, but heavy winds and heavy rain fell considerably by Sunday morning.

In Spain, winds of up to 100 km per hour caused uprooting of trees in the center of the country early in the morning. Emergency management services also issued warnings from Seoul in the north and northwest of the country for both afternoon and evening and advised residents to avoid driving during the storm.

Last week, 12 people were killed by floods in the Mediterranean island of Majorca.
